A little dark and a lot old and ragged- wall paper peeling off the wall - mold and bad linoleum! A master bath in desperate need of a makeover!
The door to the closet inside the bathroom- never really used to it's capacity- shelves and storage for suitcases mostly- we could use this space for a larger bathroom- I would love it to be a desk and hair blowing area- George had other ideas! Large tub whirlpool and heat! His favorite thing!
Yep great shelve - gotta go- lets make this room bigger! Should be brighter too with an extra window shining right into the room.

Yep this is the last we will see of this moldy old tile! And the horrible shower door - yuck! Glad to see it go! Even my cleaning guy is happy he doesn't have to attempt to clean it anymore!

So these are the pics our cleaning guy sent us - we haven't seen it totally done yet as we don't go up to Maine until May! Can't wait to get decorating! You can see we took the wall and door to the storage room off- but we inserted a tub so not a whole lot of space left! A little tight but George loves it and he's the one using it! Need to get some window treatments- I'm thinking of a Smith and Noble pull shade with fabric in gray tones. Need to get up there to measure and order!

View from the bathtub area- I am so pleased with the look - that shower is going to be great! Need a cover on the radiator and something to place towel or cosmetic bags on - will have to Homegoods for some decorating ideas!
What a difference this walk in shower makes!! A pleasure to shower in! Beveled subway tile in carerra marble and carrera basketweave tiles floor! Pretty happy with the way it turned out!
The beadboard is came out beautifully - I am pleased with the gray Benjamin Moore paint in Wolf gray!

All in all a great redo - not easy with how long our contractor took but finally done! Now I just have to get up to Maine to get to do the finishing touches!! And enjoy a new bathroom!MarciaSmithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02926681451151188443noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47831184872854246.post-33384336912269378072015-10-16T14:30:00.000-07:002015-10-16T14:30:16.223-07:00View from the House

This year a 3 mastered schooner has made its way out of Belfast Harbor to give tourists and guests a sail around the area. What a great view we have of it everyday sailing by. The pleasures of living on the Penobscot Bay in Maine! Happy End of Summer in Maine! MarciaSmithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02926681451151188443noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47831184872854246.post-26054431188868759772015-06-15T08:11:00.000-07:002015-06-15T08:11:57.835-07:00I'm Back! It's been forever but since I have a week to myself I thought I'd better update for this summer in Maine. I've been back in Maine since Memorial Day weekend. Great fun great weather! We've already had one set of guests - had loads of fun and loads of lobster! July should be chocker block full with guests every week and even some overlap. So much for updating blogs.

One of my ongoing issues have been flowers. So far the window boxes are flourishing this year!

It's still early and I hope they will start cascading and show a better view from the ground.

They look great from above- when I look down on them from the window but still need to hang down some. I am pleased with the color- funny that less is more- these are all just petunias - less exspensive than other plants.

However the urns out front have a ways to go! Still not too many blooms but always hope that a month or so from now they will be growing strong! Stay tuned!

It's time it's time!! We have a new bathroom! Can't really believe how great it came out and can't really believe how truly horrid the old bathroom was!!! I don't have too many photos of the before bathroom but take my word for it - horrid is the word!

Having a footed tub seemed so cool when we bought the house 9 summers ago- the leaking and the shower curtain sticking to your body soon made us regret the tub!!! Couldn't wait to put in a new walk in shower!

We gutted the bathroom straight to the inner walls. The workers found an old medicine bottle in the walls! I want to frame it to hang on the walls! The workers back in 1911 seemed to be imbibing in a little "medicine" or liquor during the workday!!

Mark the tile guy did a great job- subway on the walls and hexagon on the floor. We first had intended to put beveled subway on the wall but the tile store made an error - it would of added 2 weeks to the job so I settled for the plain subway- and I love the gray grout! Way better than white grout- that I learned to dislike in another bathroom!
My new fav appHaving a bit of fun with this new photography app that turns regular old photos into beautiful water colored paintings! What a great way to filter your photos. Some pics come out better than others- for example anything with a pop of color seems to look great in watercolor!! People not so much. I think you'll be surprised at how great some of them look- Thought I would do some before and afters!

Oh it costs only 2.99!! What a bargain to turn your photos into masterpieces!!!

We spent the week of Christmas up here at Lucky Stars and boy was it cold and snowy and especially icy!! The trees are totally enclosed in ice. Many trees down and lots of damage. The clean up will be extensive this spring. But the beauty is all over the place...

Flowers flowers everywhere!!! This year we have had some success with our window boxes but we are not anywhere near perfect yet- The water side boxes did much better than the front of the house. I think that's all about the sun. So much sun in the front the swedish ivy just went crazy and really crowded out all the other colorful plants.

You can see how much more colorful the window box is under the awning versus the monotone color of the upper boxes.

Here is that Swedish Ivy that crowded out everything else- it certainly grew like crazy and does hang beautifully.

This mandevilla plant is a true success in the urns on either side of the front entry. It grows like a weed and is colorful and boom heavy. This will be repeated next year!

Here is a close up of the boxes on the water side - that coleus is positively huge and does a great job- I think next year I want the coleus to be of the pink variety - more color is our goal. The biggest problem with our window boxes is that they are so high up! You really can't see them from the street - they look great as you look down on them from the window but we are always judging them from their street view.

A subdued color palette is NOT what we want - this is how the front boxes looked at the end of the summer! Goal for next year is bright colors! We'll try harder! I think they need to start a business that uses your own things to spruce up your spaces! They did a beautiful job and as usual I draped myself over the couch and watched!! :)

New wooden whale we found in a Camden antique shop has found his perch about the front door and the many books on the round table have been reorganized.
See last blog entry!!!

We are still working on the pantry- we have to get the black and white marble floor installed and that is why the dishwasher is temporarily in place. We have used a Fisher-Paykel drawer model since the original height of the counters is too low to install a regular dishwasher. When we start on the main kitchen I'm planning on 2 Bosch regular size dishwashers.

Can you believe the difference in the counters and cabinets - it's amazing!!! I probably will have a new wall color when I finally do the main kitchen over but until then we are sticking with our old butternut shade.

The opening is still a white and I don't mind it - the cutting of the middle cabinet (done before we owned the house) doesn't allow us to make the side panels stained as the wood is not the original. I was planning on laying a veneer of the original wood over the white but that might have to wait.

On a very sad note all this work was done by our painter/woodworker and over all house manager, Michael Barrett who tragically passed away this summer. Michael died in his sleep in August. He was only 58 years old. We are so sad and only now realize all he did for us. Many of our projects will be put on hold until we come up with a plan. As you can see Michael was an artist and did beautiful work - He will be missed by many up here in Maine.

This was our pantry before the start of the project. The previous owners cut the archway in the cabinets in order to open up the view through the lobster room down to the water. Great idea that worked beautifully- one thing that didn't work however was the painting of the original wood cabinets and the covering of the wood counter tops with a cheap laminate. The color of the window trim was what we were going for. Michael, our painter, spent last winter stripping and sanding the cabinets. Then he worked on staining them to match the trim. He did a fabulous job. Now to work on the counter tops!

Surprise surprise - when we pulled up the laminate we saw a fabulous tin sink hidden underneath. The drain lines that come out of the sink were a nice surprise too! They add a decorative touch to the counter.

A little closer look- quite a bit of work to sand and stain. Michael needs to get to busy :)

Now in February he has done a lot of sanding - the wood really looks fabulous. Now we have to wait until he starts the staining - all we have is these small pictures as we haven't been up to Maine since Christmas. By spring we will see a big difference. We also have to remove the bottom cabinet doors on either side of the sink to install drawer dishwashers. We thought that would solve the problem of the very low height of the counter. A regular size dishwasher doesn't fit under this 100 year old counter!

One thing I have planned is to replace the very boring tiles with something along these lines. Black and white check floor will really jazz it up!

Just got back from a fabulous trip to Kansas City!!! Yes I realize
Kansas City is not my usual tropical locale that would be the normal
fabulous trip. But this girls weekend of shopping and soaking up
decorating tips was fabulous!!

Nell Hill's shop in Atchison, Kansas is one unusual stop. Here are Kip and Nan - right when we arrived at the Nell Hill's store in Atchison. It was so over the top that I think we were all a little overwhelmed.
We all immediately started taking photos with our phones of arrangements and decorating tips- I have been in many stores that frown on people trying to "steal" ideas but this store actually encourages it!! So welcoming and friendly - these saleswomen couldn't be more helpful.
One of our high points so far this summer was the gathering of the Navy clan- 3 couples all stationed together in 1989!!! So fun to see each other after all these years! We had a ball- great big neighborhood party on the 4th of July and many smaller parties as the weekend progressed! Hopefully this is the start of an annual event!
Such fun and great weather- we traveled to Acadia Bar Harbor and even hit Morse's Sauerkraut in Waldeboro! Jean even looked up her Mom's friend from years ago! All and all a great time!!!

In one word the answer is AWESOME!!! George and I were lucky enough to get an opportunity to eat at Paul Bocuse's famous restaurant in Lyon, France L'Auberge du pont de Collonges. We actually made the reservation only about 2 weeks in advance as we decided to stay a few days in Lyon after George's morning business appointment. We took a cab for our 8pm reservations and pulled up to see the above picturesque restaurant complete with a doorman in red suit and cap!
Paul Bocuse is the Julia Child of France. Actually, the father of Nouvelle Cuisine. A French treasure revered all over the world.
We were seated in the table next to the window - a premiere spot and although the restaurant was not full when we arrived it quickly filled to the max. Our table felt very private and not at all too close to others - which happens quite a bit in France.

We decided to go with the tasting menu to get a good variety of his specialties. We went with the menu bourgeouis - the middle priced version of the menu. Good choice as this lobster was our fish course- an entire shelled lobster artistically arranged to recreate the lobster with fabulous remoulade sauce. We had already had some fabulous cheese gourgeres as a small starter and a wonderful trio of amuse bouche to start off our meal.
Of course I had to run to the ladies room and caught a glimpse of the kitchen- I asked permission to take a picture. And of course it was no problem! This restaurant is all about making the guests feel at home! After I took this quick shot one of the chefs gave me a little wave!! So cute! When we left the restaurant at 11pm every speck was cleaned up and the chefs had left for the night!

This had to be the highlight of the evening - the cheese course! What a tray!!! I had only room for 2 choices but you could have as much or as little as you wanted. The Saint Marcellin was recommended by Bruno and it couldn't have been a better choice. Creamy smooth brie like but so much better- smoothed onto baguette it was out of this would - I had a big slice of the blue cheese as well- best ever! What a treat.

Here is one table of 2-3 that were brought over to show us the samples of desserts- have as much as you want was Bruno's suggestion! Too much for me - after a 7 plus course meal only one dessert was possible!

I had a sublime merengue with raspberries and vanilla sauce. Truly the best ending of the best meal we have ever had! The price was out of this world too but hey- you only live once! Thank you Paul Bocuse and the wonderful crew at L'Auberge de pont du Collonges.

OFF TO PARIS!!! Will be back in a week with new pix and hopefully new updates!
Au revoir till then!MarciaSmithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02926681451151188443noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47831184872854246.post-30602216543459575102012-02-28T17:20:00.000-08:002012-02-28T17:20:33.723-08:00Vegetable Salad in the middle of winter!I was lucky enough to be introduced to this tasty recipe from my friends Nick and Dee. We spent a great night out eating Korean food the other night and after copious drinks back at their house we were getting ready to head home and Dee insisted we take a quart of this delicious veggie salad home with us!

I thought it looked good but never thought it would be this delicious!!! The next day I combined it with some chopped feta and yummy crackers. It was out of this world so you can imagine how happy I was that 2 days later in my email Nick attached the NY Times article and recipe!!!! Thanks Nick for turning me on to what should be a staple in my library of recipes!

It is super easy to do - just takes a long time to brine and cure. I started this morning with chopping the veggies and covering them with salt and cold water- left it to brine on the counter covered most of the day- recipe says 8 -12 hours.

You need to mix the marinade together - I did it in one quart jar then poured half of it into the other jar - then added the veggies. The marinade ingredients are easily found and some you might even have in your cupboard.

The final product - it needs to cure for at least 3 days in the frig!! It's actually called Giardiniera (pronounced jar-deen-YAIR-uh and Italian for “from the garden”) Can be used to enhance tuna salad or as a great side dish. I just love it - hope you do to !!! Thanks Dee and Nick for a great recipe.

I found this on Pinterest! Looked so good so have just made it for today's Super Bowl party- I am in Seattle so we are having a fun time with the 2 grandsons- we are of course all rooting for a Patriots win! This feta will be one of table full of dips wings and chips - Munch away!!!

Creamy Feta Dip with Jalapenos
makes about 2 cups [a little goes a long way!]
2 bricks of feta cheese, 8 ounces each
3 whole jalapeno peppers
1/4 cup olive oil + 1 tablespoon
1 bulb garlic
the juice of half a lemon
the zest of half a lemon
salt and pepper
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Chop the top off the garlic bulb and drizzle it with a teaspoon of olive oil. Wrap it in foil and roast for 25-30 minutes, or until garlic is golden in color. At the same time, brush the jalapenos with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Either grill or roast them – I stuck them in the oven with garlic and just watched until they were charred. Remove both from oven and let cool. Once jalapenos are cooled, remove skins, cut in half and discard the seeds. Chop into small pieces. Don’t touch your eyes!
In a large bowl, crumble the feta bricks. Add chopped jalapenos, the zest of half a lemon, and the juice of half a lemon. Squeeze the roasted garlic out of the bulb directly into the feta. Add 1/4 cup of olive oil and mash with a fork. You want the feta to be a bit “wet” – I can best describe it as a cross between a spread and a dip. There is no right or wrong – make it however you’d like. Taste the feta and season with salt and pepper. Serve with pita chips, warm pita or naan, or spread it on sandwiches. Store it in the fridge for up to one week – I find that I like it best at room temperature, so allow it to sit out for about 30 minutes before serving. We also think it would be great with some kalamata olives.MarciaSmithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02926681451151188443noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47831184872854246.post-45720372114763131282012-01-22T07:11:00.000-08:002012-01-22T07:11:33.300-08:00Patriots Party!

Today we will cheer on the New England Patriots in the game against the Baltimore Ravens- It's a chilly gray day and watching football is the perfect way to spend a Sunday. What to munch on while watching- Buffalo Chicken dip - of course! I make this dip quite often for Superbowl parties and it is always a hit. It's easy and comes together very quickly. Let's get comfortable, sit back, dig in and GO PATS!!!!

Cold winter weather makes us want a nice warm comfort meal- This recipe is super easy and not so gourmet that appears intimidating. You might even have all the ingredients in your cupboard right now- I love to have all the ingredients on hand. I usually pick up my short ribs at Wegman's - my all time favorite grocery store- I stock up whenever I see them and leave them in the freezer for a yummy cold winter night treat. Enjoy!

Have to tell you all about the great new restaurant in Belfast. The Lost Kitchen - on Main Street in what we refer to as the "flat iron"building. It opened this fall but we didn't get to sample until Thanksgiving.

The whole family got to go a couple of days after Thanksgiving- what a treat- they have a large selection of small plates - our crowd sampled almost all of them. Some of the highlights were frites with herb de provence, lamb sliders and fabulous fried oysters. They usually have 2 or 3 main dishes. We sampled fabulous fish with a garlic aioli and surrounded by mussels.

The desserts hold there own here as well- the "donuts and coffee" - fabulous beignets with a great coffee flavored sauce.

I had heard through the grapevine that the chef Robin- had experimented last summer with some "mystery" dinners that helped her hone her skills and define her menu.

Since Thanksgiving we have visited 2 more times and we love the atmosphere and the great wait staff. There have been some hiccups with running out of menu items before the evening is over but I so hope they iron them all out before the summer crowds arrive. The great local produce, meats and even locally roasted coffee make The Lost Kitchen a winner in Belfast!!! Check it out if you are passing by!MarciaSmithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02926681451151188443noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-47831184872854246.post-4665293016123284872012-01-02T10:16:00.000-08:002012-01-02T10:16:52.650-08:00New Year = Old Recipe

Been away from the blog for forever!!! Busy life - no excuse. Will be heading up to Maine for Thanksgiving in a few short weeks. Can't wait! Will have quite a crowd over the holiday. Will be cooking and eating up a storm!

This year will include a few recipes - want to make corn relish for a side dish. Just purchased 2 new platters for this year's table. Homegoods is such a great place to pick up these gems!

Christmas is coming on fast- must start lists and checking them twice :) Happy Fall everyone!MarciaSmithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02926681451151188443noreply@blogger.com2
